Lucas Hunter

Bio

Lucas Hunter was named the head coach of the Forsyth Tech Community College men's basketball program on August 20, 2024, becoming the architect of the Trailblazers' inaugural campaign.

"I am excited and extremely honored to lead the men's basketball program at Forsyth Tech," Hunter said upon his hiring. "I would like to thank Dr. Spriggs and Athletic Director Shelly Barnes for this opportunity and the trust they have placed in me. Forsyth Tech is A Place of Promise, and I am looking forward to sharing the vision of our program with recruits throughout the area as we build this program."

Hunter made an immediate mark in year one, guiding the Trailblazers to a remarkable 25-5 overall record in their inaugural season. Under his leadership, Forsyth Tech captured the NJCAA Region 10 Division II Regular Season Championship with a 19-3 mark in conference play, earning Hunter 2026 NJCAA Region 10 Coach of the Year honors while establishing a culture of excellence both on the court and in the classroom.

Individual player development highlighted the program's initial campaign, led by standout guard Darnerian Gibson, who garnered NJCAA Division II Honorable Mention All-America honors alongside Region 10 Freshman of the Year, Region 10 Offensive Player of the Year, and First Team All-Region accolades. Point guard Kyri Wilson earned Third Team All-Region recognition after leading all of Region 10 in assists per game, while forward Cal Barrett was also named Third Team All-Region.

Fulfilling his commitment to roster advancement, Hunter successfully transitioned three members of the inaugural squad to four-year programs at the NCAA Division II level: Barrett moved on to Young Harris College, Taky Prosper signed with American International College, and Justin Geter committed to Winston-Salem State University. Off the court, the Trailblazers achieved at a high level academically, earning recognition as an NABC Team Academic Excellence Award recipient.

Prior to arriving at Forsyth Tech, Hunter spent one season as the head coach at NJCAA Division I Seminole State College in Oklahoma, where he helped all three of the program's sophomores advance to the NCAA Division II level. He previously accumulated six seasons of NCAA Division II coaching experience in the state of Oklahoma, serving three seasons as an assistant coach at Northeastern State University, one season at Rogers State University, and two seasons as a graduate assistant at East Central University.

Throughout his collegiate coaching career, Hunter has mentored 15 all-conference selections and contributed to two top-25 NCAA Division II programs, including Rogers State’s 2020 NCAA Central Region tournament qualifier. His teams have consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to academic success and community service, earning four NABC Academic Excellence Awards during his assistant coaching tenure.

Hunter began his career in athletics as a student manager at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. A native of Carterville, Illinois, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Southern Illinois in May 2017 before completing a Master of Education in Sports Administration at East Central University in May 2019. Hunter resides in Winston-Salem with his wife Jordan.
